Summary: intriguing but odd
Comment: I got the feeling, after watching this film, that I was supposed to be lying limp on the sofa, overcome with admiration at the cleverness of the plotting and the style of the director. I wasn't completely won over though. It's certainly plot driven, and demands a lot of viewer attention; if you look away from the screen for a second you will probably miss an important development. But it's more complicated than ingenious, and working out what is happening is impeded, at times, by slack editing and flashbacks which are only signified by a ludicrous change of hairstyle on the part of the characters. I was also irritated by the contrived and pretentious visual motifs - characters constantly looking through windows, flames engulfing things in slow motion- it tries to be Peter Greenaway, but is really more at the level of a Meatloaf video. Another shortcoming is the unremitting and melodramatic score, which reminds one of a tv episode of 'Poirot'. All that aside, however, this isn't a bad movie. It's best to regard it as a comedy of errors, I suppose, since that's the unreal world of coincidences, false impressions and lost letters it chooses to inhabit, and the references to Shakespeare within the movie also suggest this. The performances are great too (Vincent Cassel is outstanding as the selfish but somehow sympathetic hero) and the whole daft, complicated plot keeps you guessing, and ties up nicely at the end. Maybe 3 and a half stars...

Summary: stylish, yes, but..
Comment: Troughout the film you are kept waiting for the story to make sense. Back in time, forward, back again, another person's view, and in the end... disappointing. In the sense of: no point made, just an assembly of stylish bits of film. Sorry, wasn't one for me.

Summary: THE PERFECT 1990'S MASTERPIECE
Comment: A brilliant film but this UK disc is second rate. If you go to Amazon France you get the France edition which is far nicer and does have sous-titres anglais.
This is the best non-epic film of the 1990's.

Summary: Chic French Thriller
Comment: "L'Appartement" is a stylish ,slick French love story cum thriller, featuring two legends of European cinema; the charismatic Vincent Cassell and the almost perfectly beautiful Monica Bellucci, who illuminates the film with her every appearance. The plot bears certain similarities to that of "Single White Female", as two pairs of friends get involved in hopelessly confused relationships with each other that,at times, turns the film into something of a comedy of errors .Cassell's pursuit of Bellucci leads him into an unexpected tryst with Romane Bohringer, Bellucci's friend and the film is further complicated by a murder-mystery involving Bellucci as well. There are a lot of flashbacks in this film which has a non-linear narrative that works quite well. "L'Appartement" is well acted by all of the cast and the cinematography is highly polished. This film is as good a romantic comedy/thriller as you are likely to find.

Comment: Gorgeous French actress Romane Bohringer plays a woman who lives in an apartment, rather like another French actress who lives in another apartment. When a French actor breaks into an apartment, thinking it’s a different apartment, massively-complicated apartment-shaped chaos ensues. Baffling.
